Patchy Cover

Insurance does not cover policy holders in the event of war. Mike Garrard of QBE Insurance, which underwrites Harvey World Travel, Qantas, STA, Jet Set, Thomas Cook Travel, AFTA and Flight Centre, says war is excluded in all classes of insurance, not just travel.

Insurers will not pay for: any loss that arises from war, invasion, act of a foreign enemy, hostilities (whether war is declared or not), civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, military or usurped power or popular uprising.

Terrorism is not excluded from policies' cover and travellers with all levels of insurance are protected for medical and additional expenses, repatriation costs and cancellations.

Garrard expects premiums will rise in the near future, partly to cover losses experienced by insurance companies in the US attacks.
